The Mill,
San Francisco

One of San Francisco's quintessential cafes, The Mill, is home to the partnership of Josey Baker Bread and Four Barrel Coffee. The space, designed by Boor Bridges Architecture, captivates neighbors and locals with its warm, minimal feel. The lighting, while simple, draws attention to the unique elements of the space: an expansive skylight above the open kitchen, and track lighting illuminating rotating artwork by local artists. There is a beauty of restraint, of understanding when enough is enough. Great lighting design mimics a tightrope, a fine balance between the rhythm of architectural and natural light. Of knowing what is just enough, and nothing more.
